CASEY-South Melbourne is all but guaranteed a top-four finish, a home final, and first finals appearance in 25 years after a thrilling four-run win against Footscray-Edgewater on Saturday.
Chasing the Dogs' 198 on their home track, the task appeared a formality for the Swans after the inclusion of their Victorian players Matthew Wade and captain Damien Wright.
Casey started promisingly with openers Rohan Blandford (43) and Rob Elston (33) putting on 82. Blandford was bowled by Brad Robertson, who stunned the Swans when he bowled Wade for a duck soon after, and when Elston went, the score was 3-91.
Wright played a watchful innings and partnered Michael Hansen in an important 37-run stand before Wright was run out for 24.
Craig Entwistle batted with patience for his 21, but it was the experience of Hansen that put his side back into the game.
Hansen faced 124 balls for his 41, which steadied the ship. Jayde Herrick lost his wicket with the Swans still needing 10 runs for victory, and Hansen fell three runs later to leave the game wide open.
It was left to Brett Eddy and Clive Rose to grind out the victory, scoring 8-202.
The Swans are second on the ladder, with their last two games against 17th-placed Hawthorn-Monash University and 15th-placed Camberwell Magpies.
