Opening partnership bolsters Koo Wee Rup

02 Nov, 2009 10:20 AM
KOO WEE RUP is within six points of top spot on the West Gippsland Cricket Association premier division ladder after defeating Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll on Saturday .

The Koowee batsmen started promisingly with a great opening partnership between Michael Giles (40) and Chris O'Hara (37). Travis Canavan kept the scoreboard ticking over to help steer his side to a competitive 5-179.

After early success with the ball, the wickets dried up for Koo Wee Rup.

It wasn't until Ben Miller (1-19) removed Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll skipper Matthew Lownds for 36 that the contest swung back in the favour of Koo Wee Rup.

In a tense finish, Nar Nar Goon/ Maryknoll nearly stole the match, falling just nine runs short of victory.

In the district section, Merinda Park had a comfortable victory over Clyde at Lineham Oval.

Saturday's demolition of Clyde showed that the Cobras will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

After winning the toss, the Cobras piled on the runs with contributions from Craig Boswell (60), Ben Whittingham (49) and Jess Mathers (50 not out) to post 5-231 after 45 overs.

A slow start to their innings cost Devon Meadows in their loss to Pakenham at Toomuc Reserve.

Devon Meadows slumped to 4-35, with Daniel Steet the only batsmen to provide any resistance with 42.

It took some defiant batting from Peter O'Brien (35) and Peter Zauner (33) to lift Devon to a respectable 167.

Zauner again led the way with the ball taking 2-27. Pakenham passed the score for the loss of seven wickets.
