DDCA brings back the shield

08 Feb, 2010 07:56 AM

THE Dandenong District Cricket Association enhanced its reputation as Melbourne's most talented suburban cricket competition after winning back-to-back Neil Wright Shields.

The DDCA under-21s defeated the top side North Metro by eight runs in a thriller at Toorak Park in Armadale. Batting first, the DDCA was deep in trouble at 6-79, before the tail-enders came in to add a valuable 101.

Narre Warren's Jarryd Leworthy top scored with 45 and No. 10 batsman and Journal Cricketer of the Week winner, Jonathon Rudge from Hampton Park, chimed in with 19 to steer Dandenong to 180.

At 3-98, North West looked on track for a win, but in a devastating spell of bowling lost 4-28 to be a shaky 7-126 and was hoping for the some heroics from its tail-end batsmen.

North East clawed its way to be 7-171 but lost the last two wickets to be all out for 172.

Rudge was the best of the bowlers with 3-31 off nine overs and received solid back-up from Cranbourne's Aaron Morrison with 2-17 off eight overs, Coomoora's Tim Beech 2-22 and Narre Warren's Trent Anderson 2-37.

The win was capped with three DDAC players: captain Rob Johnston from Coomoora, Aaron Morrison and Jarryd Leworthy being selected in the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union to play the Victorian Country Cricket League at Seymour on Sunday.
