LORRAINE Wreford will contest a seat in November's state election while serving as Casey's mayor.
"I will campaign in my own time," Cr Wreford said last week when confirming she had been chosen as the Liberal Party's endorsed candidate for the seat of Mordialloc.
Cr Wreford is the second Casey councillor to confirm state ambitions. Cr Daniel Mulino has said he would immediately quit the council if selected on April 19 as the Labor candidate for the outer eastern Liberal-held seat of Kilsyth as it wouldn't be fair to his constituents to stay on.
Cr Wreford said Cr Mulino was in a different position to her "as he has a very different job which demands a lot of his time".
"At the end of the day, I may or may not get elected to State Parliament so in the meantime I will concentrate on my job as mayor which is a job I love and relish.
"I have worked hard to represent the community and take on this role and I won't be neglecting my duties as mayor."
Mordialloc includes the suburbs of Braeside, Cheltenham, Dingley Village, Heatherton, Highett, Mentone, Mordialloc, Springvale South and Waterways. Cr Wreford would need a 3.6per cent swing to win the seat from Labor's Janice Munt.
Speculation continued last week that Cr Geoff Ablett is considering taking on Labor incumbent Jude Perera for the seat of Cranbourne as a Liberal candidate at the November election. Cr Ablett declined to comment.
While councillors Mulino and Ablett are first-termers, Cr Wreford has already served eight years as a councillor.
Cr Kevin Bradford said while Cr Wreford had paid her dues to the Casey community "it would be proper of her to stand down during the election campaign".
"It would be extremely hypocritical for her to not to, after accusing me of a conflict of interest when I worked for a member of State Parliament."
