Coroner probing toddler's death

06 Jul, 2009 09:37 AM
CORONIAL investigations continue as police rule out foul play in the death of a toddler tested positive to swine flu.

The three year old was found by his mother in their Doveton family home on June 26. It's unknown what role the H1N1 influenza strain played in the toddler's death, however Casey detectives believe the toddler had been suffering flu-like symptoms.

While state coroner Jennifer Coate confirmed the toddler tested positive to swine flu, she was yet to establish a cause of death until the results from medical examinations are available.

Department of Human Services deputy chief health officer, Dr Rosemary Lester has encouraged parents to monitor their children's health. "It's important to remember [that in] the vast majority of cases, including in children, swine flu is a mild illness which many people recover from without any medical treatment."

Dr Lester said people with respiratory or heart diseases, diabetes and obesity were at a higher risk of contracting H1N1.

Southern Health has advised people must be diligent in following flu season hygiene procedures such as regular hand-washing and covering their nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing.

As of last Friday, there have been 34 and 32 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Greater Dandenong and Casey respectively.
