Chileans get a hand

15 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
ORGANISERS hope a fund-raiser on Saturday for victims of the earthquake in Chile will draw a big crowd.

The Rising from the Ashes dinner dance at the Berwick Leisure Centre will feature a range of musical and dance performances, including in latin dance, as well as raffles and Chilean food.

Casey-based organiser Laura Fuentes said: "It's going to be a mix of cultures united for a good cause."

Miss Fuentes said Casey's Chilean community, particularly in Narre Warren, had been deeply affected by the tragedy.

She did not get the news that all her relatives in Chile had survived until several days after the tragedy as communications broke down.

"A neighbour lost three family members from the tsunami that followed the quake and a friend of mine lost her niece and her baby," Miss Fuentes said.

"It will take Chile years to recover."

The Violeta Parra folk dancing group, which includes members from Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Hallam and Dandenong, is spearheading the event, which has also received support from Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley and Casey councillor Lynette Keleher.

The fund-raiser runs from 5pm-midnight on

Saturday at the Berwick Leisure Centre, 79 Manuka Road. A $10 donation is requested from adult attendees.
