POLICE arrested four people and issued 16 penalty notices in a night-time crackdown on public order offences on services on the Cranbourne railway line.
One hundred and ten people were questioned on June 26 during Operation Safe Stations, which included members of the dog squad and mounted branch.
There were two arrests for assault-related offences, one for drugs and one for alcohol.
Police patrolled stations including Dandenong and Caulfield and stopped more than 500 vehicles, nabbing two drink-drivers and one drug-driver.
Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Atkins, of Springvale police, said police were being proactive in approaching "people we feel are at risk" and giving them tips on how to be safe on the rail system.
He said that included those of Indian appearance, a demographic that has been the subject of several recent assaults.
"We're not specifically targeting that population - we're targeting the general population across the board. We give them a leaflet that provides tips on how they can minimise risk," Senior Sergeant Atkins said. "Travelling with a friend, not travelling late at night, keeping their valuables hidden, those kinds of things."
He said the operation was instigated by Springvale police and had now been "picked up across the whole metro area". "It started here. We did it first and now it's gained momentum."
The Friday-night crackdown was part of an ongoing operation focusing on increasing police presence at stations in Dandenong and the surrounding area.
